Armed police are hunting for a man believed to be carrying a weapon in Chichester.

Schools in the city were locked down on Friday afternoon, before children were later sent home.

Police posted on social media to warn people away from the area after the alleged suspect was reportedly spotted in Litten Gardens.

Several reports later claimed a person had been arrested, however this has not been confirmed by police, who were still advising members of the public to stay away at 4pm.

The Independent understands the incident is not believed to be terror-related.

Video footage shared on Twitter showed a police helicopter circling over Chichester High School.

The school used its website to tell parents it had kept all pupils inside on police advice and that they were safe, before later posting an update to say it had allowed them to go home on police advice.

Deputy headteacher Tom Brixey said the incident was not linked to the school, “but the wider Chichester area”.

A Sussex Police spokesperson confirmed armed officers were involved in the response.

Some pupils reportedly ‘quite shaken’ by incident

A parent whose two children attend Chichester High School said pupils were told the school was on lockdown at about 3.08pm today before they were released at about 3.35pm.

The mother, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Independent teachers informed the pupils about the lockdown but “they didn’t know why”.

Pupils were then reportedly given permission to use their mobile phones, at which point the parent’s daughter sent her a text message.

She said her children told her some of the pupils were “quite shaken up” by the incident.

Statement from school locked down during incident

At least two schools in the area – Chichester High School and Portfield Primary Academy – were locked down earlier today but children have now been sent home.

The deputy head teacher of Chichester High School sent parents and carers this update at about 3.15pm today:

We have now let students leave the school site. This follows confirmation from Sussex Police that it is safe for children to travel home. The Police advice is that students go straight home.

Please do not ring the school so that our phone lines can remain clear.

This was not an incident linked to Chichester High School but the wider Chichester area.

Thank you for your support. As we know more we will update you as appropriate.
