England fans at Trafalgar Square erupted into loud cheers as Jack Grealish was brought on.

Supporters in the fan zone began chanting “Super Jacky Grealish” as the Aston Villa player ran onto the pitch.

The atmosphere became more positive and animated, with fans growing louder as the game went on.

Fans could be heard clapping every England move and booing every Italy one.

England supporters at the fan zone in Trafalgar Square are “nervous” for possible penalties as the game goes on.

Supporters at the landmark have become increasingly quiet, though some continue to launch fireworks into the air.

Peter Rickter, 29, from Wimbledon, south London, said: “I’m really nervous now, the longer the game goes on, the more I back the Italians.

“They just seem to be holding their nerve better.”

With the game going to extra time, fans in central London are buzzing with nervous energy during England’s clash against Italy.

The atmosphere is quieter than earlier, with most people’s attention fixed entirely on the screen.

Simo Elkhouda, 25, who is originally Moroccan but lives in London is watching the game at the Shakespeare’s Head pub in Soho.

He told PA: “It’s very tough. We hope it’s going to be better during extra time.”

He believes that England “has a chance” if the match goes to penalties. Mr Elkhouda added: “England is doing well but it’s a matter of luck.”

If England win, he said it is going to be “crazy” but that the country needs to be ready to “accept” the possibility of a loss.

Meanwhile in Surrey, police had to be called help clear fans and close a pub after it became overwhelmed by fans.

“There has been an increased police presence in the Copthorne area this evening, assisting the proprietor of the Cherry Tree Inn after the decision was made to close the establishment due to unforeseen numbers of guests arriving,” the force said in a statement.

“Due to the number of people present, police were asked to assist in moving fans on to ensure all parties were safe.”

One fan inside the stadium told The Independent that as many as a thousand fans had got inside the ground.

Video footage showed one intruder being removed from a seat by paying supporters.

A spokesperson for Wembley Stadium has admitted that there has been a security breach, saying “a small group of people got into the stadium.”

“We are now working closely with stadium stewards and security to remove these people. Anyone inside the stadium without a ticket will be instantly ejected,” the spokesperson said.

Earlier, a spokesperson denied there had been a security breach when it was reported that fans had stormed the stadium prior to kick-off.

Fans have asked journalists to report on the situation where ticketless fans have stolen seats after storming the stadium, our correspondent Miguel Delaney has reported.

Stewards are asking their superiors what to do in a situation where they have clearly lost control, he said.

A “steady flow” of ticketless fans continued to swarm Wembley’s stands as the opener was scored, Our senior football correspondent has reported.

Melissa Reddy said: “Aisles so full, stairs blocked and the disabled area in front of the press box is packed.

“Paying supporters pleading with helpless stewards to get them out. Kids scared, seats stolen. Unsafe.”
