Gove warns hospitals could be ‘overwhelmed’ without Covid tiers

Boris Johnson has appointed a dedicated minister to take charge of the deployment of the Covid vaccine, days after Labour warned the role was necessary to avoid a repeat of the mistakes seen over PPE and NHS Test and Trace.

Nadhim Zahawi will be made a health minister, with responsibility for the coronavirus vaccine, Downing Street has announced. The temporary arrangement is set to last until at least next summer.

Meanwhile, the first coronavirus vaccine could be approved by regulators in the UK by “early to mid December”, an NHS boss has said, as reports suggest healthcare staff could receive the first jabs within days.

Hospitals have been told to prepare for the rollout of the Pfizer/BioNTech jab to begin within just 10 days, according to The Guardian.

It came as Michael Gove warned that every hospital in England could be overwhelmed with coronavirus cases if MPs do not support the new tiered system of restrictions.
