Biden news – live: President calls for ‘common sense gun law reforms’ as Democrats rue Trump acquittal

Trump drives past supporters at impromptu rally in Florida

Donald Trump drove by an impromptu President’s Day rally of his supporters in Palm Beach, Florida.

The ex-president had kept a low profile since his Saturday acquittal at the end of his historic second impeachment trial.

Earlier Democratic senator Amy Klobuchar said that Mr Trump’s political career was over, despite his acquittal in the Senate after being impeached by the House of Representatives for inciting the Capitol riot.

“He violated his oath of office in what Liz Cheney called the greatest betrayal of a president’s oath of office in history,” she argued on Fox News. “And those memories and those police officers’ screams will be forever etched in the memory of Americans.”

Mr Trump’s successor as US president, Joe Biden, has meanwhile called for “common sense gun law reforms” on the third anniversary of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which saw 17 people shot dead and 17 more injured, giving rise to the March for our Lives movement. “We owe it to all those we’ve lost and to all those left behind to grieve to make a change. The time to act is now,” he said in a statement.

Former Republican senator says its time for ‘party to move on from Trump’

Jeff Flake, who served as a Senator for Arizona for six years wrote in an opinion piece for CNN that the GOP had to break with the ex-president.

“There is no redeeming his behavior. And let’s not continue this tragic charade by further humiliating and debasing ourselves,” wrote Mr Flake.

“History always knows the truth. Let’s learn the lessons of this experience, admit our failings and move on. This is what our country deserves.”

Inside the presidential routine

Joe Biden has set out a new White House routine that hugely differs from his predecessor Donald Trump, arriving in the Oval Office by 9am and heading to bed early, according to CNN.

Mr Biden starts his day by having coffee with the first lady, before heading to the Oval Office for 9am to begin meetings and phone calls.

The president heads back to the residence by 7pm, taking documents and paperwork with him in his leather briefcase.

Unlike his predecessor Donald Trump, Mr Biden “is more of an early-to-bed type. He has continued a tradition of reading letters from Americans, a handful of which are tucked into the briefing materials he brings home in the evenings,” reports the news network.

Biden urged to replace entire USPS board as DeJoy plans slower mail and postage hikes

US Postal Service chief Louis DeJoy intends to roll out a plan to raise postal rates and eliminate first-class mail deliveries, moves that are likely to lead to slower mail and higher costs passed on to customers, according to reports.

The potential cutbacks to first-class mail – which include letters, bills and other mail sent to local addresses – would eliminate two-day deliveries, and instead lump that mail into current three- and five-day tiers, the same as nonlocal mail.
