Trump supporters clash with police on Capitol steps
Senators have confirmed Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States, hours after a deadly siege of the Capitol Building in Washington, DC, by pro-Trump rioters.
Four people were killed, with one woman fatally shot inside the US Capitol Building, while another three people died after suffering “medical emergencies” as the incident unfolded. Suspected explosive devices were also found and dealt with at the headquarters of both the RNC and DNC.
The attack at the heart of US democracy by far-right groups including the Proud Boys, who boasted of causing “absolute terror”, has received international condemnation, while former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton have directly blamed Donald Trump’s incendiary and baseless claims of election fraud for the violent scenes.
Mr Trump was suspended from Twitter after he described protesters as “very special”, told them “we love you” and repeated his false assertions over the election in a video message meant to calm the situation. He has since been indefinitely banned from Facebook and Instagram.
A raft of administration officials have resigned in wake of the violence, including deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews, first lady Melania Trump’s chief of staff Stephanie Grisham, White House social secretary Rickie Niceta and Mr Trump’s former acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney.
Washington DC attorney general calls for 25th amendment to be invoked
Karl Racine says that vice president Mike Pence and the cabinet should invoke the 25th amendment to immediately remove Donald Trump from office.
“Donald Trump needs to be held accountable. He’s unfit for office.,” Mr Racine told MSNBC.
His call for action comes after senate minority leader Chuck Schumer also called for it to be invoked.

Acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen says that the Justice Department will continue to arrest and charge Trump rioters over the storming of the US Capitol Building.
“Some participants in yesterday’s violence will be charged today, and we will continue to methodically assess evidence, charge crimes and make arrests in the coming days and weeks to ensure that those responsible are held accountable under the law,” said Mr Rosen in a statement.

West Virginia lawmaker insists he stormed Capitol in ‘media’ role
More than 10,000 people have already signed a petition calling for West Virginia House of Delegates member Derrick Evans to be removed just a month after he was sworn in.
The Republican delegate videoed himself entering the Capitol but has now removed it from his social media accounts.
“We’re in! Keep it moving, baby!” Mr Evans says on the video, according to CBS News.
Now Mr Evans says in a statement that he did not participate in the damaging of any property and that he was “simply there as an independent member of the media to film history.”

Army veteran who wouldn’t leave anyone behind seen comforting fellow lawmaker in viral photo
An photo of Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran and Democratic congressman for Colorado Jason Crow – whom you might remember as one of his side’s impeachment managers from last year – comforting a fellow lawmaker during yesterday’s siege has gone viral and stands as a commendable example of courage under fire.

Where is Trump? With an empty schedule after day of ‘insurrection’, president sits and fumes over Pence
The president’s publicly available schedule is empty yet again today as a statement released to the press read: “President Trump will work from early in the morning until late in the evening. He will make many calls and have many meetings.”
Some reports indicated he may present Presidential Medal of Freedom awards to golfers, while others suggested he’d be calling Republican officials throughout the day.
But inside the White House residency, Trump is reportedly irate over his vice president’s failure to intervene in the vote certification – despite Mike Pence not having any way to do so in his mostly symbolic role presiding over the typically mundane procedure.

William Barr accuses Trump of ‘betrayal’ of presidency
The president’s attorney general, who shepherded him clear of the Mueller report and signed off on the brutal teargassing of Black Lives Matter protesters in DC last June, has been at odds with Trump since declaring definitely last month that there was just no evidence for his ludicrous “mass voter fraud” nonsense.
He’s now come out and overtly condemned him.

Husband pays tribute to ‘great patriot’ and QAnon believer shot dead in attempt to storm US Capitol
My story on Ashli Babbit, the Air Force veteran and conspiracy theorist shot and killed by a plainclothes policeman during yesterday’s rampage on Capitol Hill as she and other misguided rioters fought to occupy government offices.
One of her final tweets this week read: “Nothing will stop us….they can try and try and try but the storm is here and it is descending upon DC in less than 24 hours….dark to light!”
