A palace statement released on behalf of the Queen on Tuesday said the “whole family is saddened” by how “challenging” the previous years have been for the royal couple.
It added that the allegations of racism are “concerning” and will be “addressed by the family privately.”
During a two-hour TV special, Meghan said conversations were had about how dark her child’s skin would be when she was pregnant.
The couple’s interview, which aired on American network, CBS, on Sunday night, was then played to UK audiences on ITV on Monday night.
Meghan ‘formally filed a complaint’ about Piers Morgan
Since it was announced on Tuesday that Piers Morgan would no longer be working on GMB, there have been numerous reports on the extent of the complaints filed against his show following Oprah on Monday morning.
Now ITV’s Royal Editor, Chris Ship, claims that the duchess herself also sent a complaint to ITV.
He tweeted: “So … the Duchess of Sussex formally filed a complaint to @ITV on Monday. It’s thought to have been sent to the broadcaster’s CEO.
“Meghan raised concerns about how @piersmorgan’s words affect the issue of mental health and what it might do to others contemplating suicide.”
Morgan said on Monday’s show, “I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report”, including her suicidal thoughts.

‘Jaws dropped across the United States’ during interview, says royal author
Omid Scobie, the royal journalist who co-authored the Finding Freedom book about the couple’s decision to step back from the royal family, has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Today show to discuss the Oprah interview.
Scobie said that the interview carefully distinguished “between the institution of the monarchy and the Royal Family” and their “happiness within the institution [and] their feelings of being unprotected and not looked after”.
He also said at the moment when Meghan revealed the conversation about Archie’s potential skin colour “jaws dropped” across the USA.
He said: “There was a moment across the entire United States where jaws dropped when Meghan went into detail about how a Royal Family member questioned or expressed concern about how dark Archie’s skin may be.”
And on the Queen, Scobie said: “We’d heard a lot of worry over the last few weeks that the couple might disrespect the Queen in this Oprah special, they may hurt her, in fact we discovered or heard more details about just how close they’ve been with her Majesty.”

Former Australian PM says Oprah interview raises questions over ties to the monarchy
Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said the Oprah interview adds weight to the idea that Australia should cut ties with the British monarchy.
Turnbull told the Australian Broadcasting Corp: “It’s clearly an unhappy family or at least Meghan and Harry are unhappy. It seems very sad.
“After the end of the queen’s reign, that is the time for us to say: Okay, we’ve passed that watershed. Do we really want to have whoever happens to be the head of state of — the king or queen of the U.K., automatically our head of state?”
Turnbull met the duke and duchess of Sussex in April 2018 – during their Pacific tour – four months before he was replaced by current PM Scott Morrison.
The Queen is Australia’s head of state.

Describing Markle as a “selfless friend”, Williams said on Twitter: “She teaches me every day what it truly means to be noble”.

“He was, and is still there. My choice is to love the man I know, and the decisions he makes.”
Leigh Anne Pinnock, of Little Mix, said on Instagram: “What people may wish to believe and view as a “privileged life” let this be a lesson to all of us.
“When you become known to the public there is no safety net to protect you from what people can fire out and say about you.
“We witness this all the time, particularly concerning women and more to the core, women of colour.
“Meghan has been dragged from the start and we have all witnessed it.
“I praise her strength and determination for speaking out on her experiences showing the underlying racism lying within the royal establishment.”

Piers Morgan describes Oprah interview as ‘diatribe of bilge’
Speaking on Wednesday morning – following his departure from Good Morning Britain – Morgan told reporters: “I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion.
“If people want to believe Meghan Markle that is entirely their right.
“I don’t believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage that she as done to the British monarchy and the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible
“So if I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview then so be it…”

Comment: Piers Morgan has left ITV. The palace has issued a statement. It’s time to accept the truth is worse than the rumours
Now that Piers Morgan has left ITV and the palace has issued a response to the Oprah documentary, it’s time to come to terms with the fact that the truth about the royal family is worse than the rumours, writes Harriet Hall.
In the Independent, Hall writes: “The institution’s perpetual fear that they might be dismissed as irrelevant forms a central theme of each series of The Crown.
“And now, Harry has confirmed it was so, speaking boldly about the symbiotic relationship – the “invisible contract” – between the press and the royal family. He begged them to ‘call the dogs off’ and dismiss tabloid lies about Meghan. They chose not to.”

On Wednesday, the broadcaster tweeted: “On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview.
“I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t,” Morgan wrote.
“If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”
The broadcaster tweeted his comments alongside an image of Sir Winston Churchill that is accompanied by the following quote: “Some people’s idea of free speech is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone says anything back, that is an outrage.”
Morgan said on the programme that he didn’t believe Meghan when she told Oprah she had experienced suicidal thoughts while in the royal family, prompting widespread criticism from mental health campaigners and charities.

MP calls for action on press bullying of women in the public eye
MP Holly Lynch is calling for MPs to take further action against press bullying women in the public eye.
Lynch also coordinated the letter from 72 female MPs to Meghan in 2019 that criticised the negative media coverage of the duchess that they said had “colonial undertones”.
Now, she has told the Guardian that she wants further action to be taken to protect women from being treated this way in the press.
“A lot of media outlets have not heeded those calls for a change, which is why we might start needing to think about a case to government about how we stop hounding women in public life and put them in a position where they feel suicidal,” she said.

Don Lemon says Harry and Meghan’s claims aren’t surprising because monarchy is ‘built on racism’
CNN’s Don Lemon has reacted to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview, saying monarchy is “built on racism”.
He said after Harry and Meghan’s sit-down with Oprah Winfrey that he doesn’t believe “anyone who watched it, especially any person of colour, is surprised that the British family – that there is racism there”.
“That is what the monarchy is based on: heredity, hierarchy, a caste system, blood lines,” he added.

‘They did the barest minimum’
Simon Kelner, writing in the i, has criticised Buckingham Palace’s response this evening to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s allegations, saying they have done the “barest minimum.”
He writes: “I think it is untenable for the Palace to resist launching an inquiry into a claim of racism, given that only last week, it announced it was investigating allegations that Meghan had bullied staff members.”
Mr Kelner adds: “Within every problem lies an opportunity, and the Royal Family missed a historic chance to place itself at the centre of a modern Britain, and to set an example to other representative institutions (the Church, the City, the legal establishment, the Press) where casual racism still survives.
“The Palace should have been unequivocal that racism – however unintended or unconscious – must be called out. And that the hurt racist behaviour causes can be judged only by those who feel it, not by those who don’t.”

Psychologist commends ‘role model’ Prince Harry
A psychologist has commended Prince Harry for his openness in discussing his mental health during his and Meghan Markle’s recent interview with Oprah Winfrey.
In an essay for CNN, John Duffy, a psychologist, praised Harry’s honesty about his and Meghan’s mental health struggles saying it as “one of the most striking elements of the interview” and an example as to why Harry is a “role model” of masculinity.
“I wish other men and boys could do the same. Harry’s emotional expression could encourage men and boys to open up as well, and to reframe and broaden our definition of masculinity,” he continued.

Palace response ‘dignified’ and ‘full of sorrow’ claims royal expert
Buckingham Palace’s response to the serious issues raised by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in their explosive Oprah Winfrey interview was “dignified” and “skilful”, a royal expert has said.
Penny Junor, an author of royal biographies, said the tone of the palace’s response appeared to be one of “sorrow”, rather than anger.
She said: “I think this response is dignified. It is leaving Harry and Meghan some dignity and it’s expressing that they will always be much-loved members of the family.
“It says that they are saddened to learn how challenging those years were for Meghan and Harry.
“They are saying ‘we didn’t appreciate quite how tough it was for you, you’ve raised an issue of race, which is worrying to us, and while some recollections may vary, we hear what you’re saying and will look closely and address any failings we find’.
“So they are saying we don’t buy everything you’ve accused us of.”
