The US Capitol building has been placed on lockdown and a person was taken into custody after a vehicle rammed through a security barricade, injuring at least two police officers.
The United States Capitol Police Department wrote in a tweet at 1:26 p.m. local time: “USCP is responding to the North Barricade vehicle access point along Independence Avenue for reports someone rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers. A suspect is in custody. Both officers are injured. All three have been transported to the hospital. “
The Associated Press reported a suspect lunged at officers with a knife after emerging from the vehicle. The incident is the first major security breach since the January 6 riots, in which pro-Trump extremists stormed security barricades and attacked police officers as Congress convened to certify the results of the 2020 elections, killing five people.
